Corfu is part of the Ionian Islands, a group of seven isles endowed with stunning natural beauty and very mild climate, stretching from the northwest coast of Greece all the way to the south of the Peloponnese peninsula. Corfu Town, the capital of the island and home to 45000 people, is undeniably one of the most cosmopolitan places in Greece -a cultural crossroadt hroughout its entire history with such significan site as the Liston and the Esplanade Square, The Old Fortress, The New Fortress, The Palace of St. Michael and George, the Museum of Asian Art etc. The best time to travel to the Corfu is between April and June and September to the beginning of November. In the summer months it gets very hot. Active travelers should go in the spring time. In the winter months snow is possible. As well as relaxing on one of the many Corfu beaches, there are many interesting excursions within close distance of Corfu Town. For example, in Kanoni you can visit the royal estate of Mon Repos, where Prince Philip was born and also Pontikonissi (Mouse Island) with its famous little chapel. The Achilleion, constructed for Elizabeth, (Princess Sissy), Empress of Austria in1892 in Gastouri, is also well worth a visit, as is the 13th Century Byzantine fortress of Angelokastro, near Paleokastritsa.
