Nissaki Beach Hotel, Corfu | "Relaxing Break in Corfu"

We booked our holiday through MyTravel online - one week including flights from Gatwick and transfers cost just 260 pounds per person, on a half board basis. We checked this site before we booked, and we were not disappointed. We are a couple in our early 30s who sometimes do packages and sometimes do other types of holiday. This Nissaki Beach hotel attracted mainly couples of all ages, but would be perfectly suitable for families too. Many of the guests were repeat guests - at least half of the English that we spoke to had been there before - some 6 times before, one 14 times before. This place has its fans!

Location - you will see complaints about the hill up to the main road - mostly from people who never tried to walk it. It's less than 10 minutes, and it is not Mount Everest. We did it in the morning when it was cool, and didn't see what the fuss was about. The location you are getting is right on the pebbly beach at the foot of some hills - worth the inconvenience I think. The fact that many of the guests here are older couples that keep coming back suggests that you don't need to walk the hill to have a nice time (we only did it to catch a bus)

Things to do - we walked along the coast each way - some great views and small beaches, including Agni and Kalami in one direction (no need to climb to the road), and Kaminaki (the nearest next bay, 10 minute walk) and Nissaki itself (which does require a walk up to the road (but can be done in the shade by taking a path off at Kaminaki). We also used the courtesy bus to Corfu town for 3 hours exploring and shops, and used the local bus service to Kassiopi, another nice place. (stops at top of the drive, and very cheap form of transport). Some guests get hire cars, but it isn't necessary - there are places to hire a boat for the day, and probably a nicer way to explore (although we didn't try it this time). Even without using any transport at all it would be possible to sit on a different bay each day

There are no big villages - just small places on this part of the island - gives it a certain charm. There are enough tavernas to give you lunch options, but supermarkets are thin on the ground - there is a small one at Kaminaki that opens mornings only - so for purchasing water use this (4.5 litres for 2euros 20, or in villages when out (anything between 45-65 cents for 1.5 litres). The hotel charges 1euro 60 per litre, the bar at the end of the beach 1 euro 50 for a litre and a half. When it is warm you'll get through gallons of the stuff! Take money too...there are ATMs in Corfu town and at Kassiopi but not in between

The room was fine - large enough with a balcony - nothing fancy, but everything worked, including the air-con. We had a part sea view which we didn't pay for. You won't be in your room much - people were still swimming in the sea at 7pm because it was so warm. The pool is nice - about 20 metres long, and not seawater as in some brochures. The water was clean without being heavily chlorinated, and the pool itself was never that busy - probably one of the nicest holiday pools I've been in. Plenty of sunloungers, but a little short of parasols, although you could usually find a shady spot in the afternoon.

The restaurant is great - lots of nice food, loads of choice, and with the outdoor seating area overlooking the sea, a really relaxing place to eat. All the staff are friendly in there too. Half board can make you feel you want to eat and go, but we sat and enjoyed our meal with a bottle of wine. House wine comes in a bottle for 9 euros, and it's perfectly drinkable. They do themed evenings, which allows you to try some specialities, but still with plenty of other food on offer

Drinks in the Nissaki Beach Hotel were a little pricey - to be expected. We visited a bar further down the beach each evening with good priced drinks and views over the sea. 3 euros gets you a carafe of wine there, or a nice sized cocktail. We only saw brief glimpses of the hotel entertainment, and we didn't hear great things about it - but that's not what we go on holiday for...if you value entertainment rather than conversation then I would not recommend this hotel for you. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday in nice scenery, are not too fussed about nightlife, and might fancy exploring a bit in the day time, this is the place to go. If you just want to flop by the pool they do an all-inclusive option (popular with French and German visitors).
