After reading all the extremely positive comments about Kontokali Bay Hotel in Corfu, we decided to book a family room in September. The least we can say is that we had too high expectations...
In particular the begining of our stay didn't start very well, since on our arrival our room was not ready and we were told to wait in a bar. Fair enough, that happens, but instead of offering us a glass of water (which we did order and payed for) the staff actually forgot us there... Only after waiting for an hour we finally went back to ask, how much more should we wait, we were shown to our room. The first impression of the room was quite shocking, in particular since the room reeked of cigars... Not a place where you would like to stay with a child. However, after complaining about the smell were were given another room on the same corridor. As said - nothing major, but after reading all the praising reviews we were a bit disappointed.

The family rooms are small, old (especially the bathroom) and very badly insonorised (5cm space under the doors!!! have never seen that before). Breakfast is definitely not 5 stars, small choice for those who don't like heavy English breakfast, poor bread and very bad croissant. In top of that they serve horrible cheap orange juice. We read reviews about that and we couldn't believe it's true. Real juice can be ordered but the staff really try to avoid giving it to you (unless you are a "good customer" aka tip giver). Have you ever been in a 3, 4 or 5 stars without real orange juice? We are used to tipping after receiving good service - not in order to receive it in thje first place

The staff book some tables (all the best ones) for the "good" customers in the buffet restaurant (both dinner AND breakfast) and jump on the client who tries to sit on a wrong table. We can understand that some older people have their habits in the hotel and come there every year but personally I don't find that very professional. Rooms are clean and the cleaning ladies very polite. The beach is nice with lots of sunbeds. Sea is clean. The view from the front of the hotel towards the sea is beautiful. Miniclub is great (many thanks to Cristiana). The lunch buffet by the sea is nice and fairly priced, in particular since you will only pay what you take on your plate. Conclusion : We had a good stay but we wouldn't go back
