Nissaki Beach Hotel, Corfu | "Extremely disappointing"

I have just returned from Nissaki Beach and actually cut my week long trip short by 3 days as I hated the hotel so much. Location is remote, so not the place to go if you are looking for wild and crazy nights out, which suited me fine. The beach was beautiful - very clear water, great views, wonderfully peaceful. The pool is quite small considering the size of the hotel. I was there at the end of the season but I can imagine it would be impossible to get a bed by the pool in the summer - which gives them a good reason to move you to the beach and charge for parasol/bed hire. You had to put €10 deposit down to hire a towel, and the towels you were given were pretty small and worn.

When I booked the Nissaki Beach hotel I was pleased that it had a gym and took all my sports kit. I needn't have bothered. There were some weight machines but the cardio stuff looked as though it had been ordered from a supplement in the Sunday Papers. A total waste of time. The hotel is tired and I was surprised that it was refurbished as recently as 2006. Whilst the photos look great, and the bar wouldn't look out of place in St Martins Lane, the bedrooms are basic, and every time I stood in the bath to take a shower I was worried it would crack as it was so flimsy - and I weigh 9 stone!
The air conditioning didn't work - in fact it seemed to blow warm air, and even after leaving it on all night the temperature was around 24 degrees. The satelite TV was disappointing - the only channel I could find was BBC World News - no movies, no MTV. I know you don't go on holiday to watch TV but it is nice to have something else to watch.

Nissaki Beach is not a hotel for non smokers - all of the public areas stank of smoke, either a fresh smog of it (esp in the evenings) or stale smoke in the mornings. It was gross. There didn't seem to be any non-smoking rooms.
I had to move from the first room as the smell of stale smoke pervaded everything, and yet the 2nd room also smelt, not helped by the fact that the smell of smoke hung in the corridor. I swear it seemed to come through the air con too. Perhaps the smoking ban in the UK has meant that we are spoilt now, but if, like me, you don't like the smell of smoke, you were better off outdoors and far away from anyone with a cigarette in their hands.

The food became the final straw for me. I was on half board and the meals were so repetative. Tinned peaches and pears for breakfast and dinner. Overcooked vegetables. Every meat dish in some kind of sauce. Lots of stodge and the same stodge over and over. Where were the fantastic greek salads? One of the waiters was incredibly sullen and actually quite rude, refusing to give me cutlery one night and leaving me standing in the middle of the dining room whilst he walked off and never came back! I was totally amazed that this hotel has been given 4 star "premier" accreditation by the travel company and assumed that the benchmark for Corfu hotels must be low. However, having been delayed 17 hours for the return flight,, we were put up in a 4 star hotel near the airport and it was wonderful! If only I'd been moved to that one I might have had a good holiday and stayed for the rest of the week. Instead I feel as though I've wasted money and a week off of work
