Corfu Palace Hotel Review | "The perfect Town location hotel"
This June was our second visit to the Corfu Palace. In just a year some standards appeared to have slipped....Also, because of the Euro it proved much more expensive this year. Sadly, the lovely, charismatic Maitre D (at breakfast) had retired and the remaining staff seemed lacking in his customer service and drive - he was such a cheerful lovely efficient man! At breakfast we enjoyed the fantastic buffet/hot&cold food - you can sit on the most beautiful terrace under parasolls. We never had dinner at the hotel as the whole set-up looked terribly formal and out-of-date, although it clearly suited the older folk who didn't wish to venture out into the lively town for the atmosphere. |
We found somewhere different to eat every night - there is so much choice in Corfu Town!! As well as heading for the main area of town (which is left out of the hotel), turn right out of the hotel and walk along to the end of the 'pier' - several little cafes there looking out to sea. You get some real Greek atmosphere on this 'pier' (cannot think of a better name) with all the locals taking in the evening sun. The corn on the cobs cooked on little grills by the roadside are delicious! How lovely seeing Greek children nibbling these rather than stuffing sweets in their mouths! |
Back to the Corfu palace hotel - it just looks/feels dated now, as other reviewers have said. The rooms are very clean & comfortable, yes, and the view over Garitsa Bay is wonderful (given there's a busy-ish road infront of the hotel - altho' it didnt bother us noise-wise). Housekeeping staff were smiley and lovely, but the air of formality/seriousness at reception needs softening. Hardly anyone at reception ever spoke to us! The lady in the jewellry shop within the hotel was the most friendly and she offers lots of advice regarding where to go |
I would like to see (and I think it's essential for the future of the hotel) some less formal evening dining as an option and then we would have eaten in one night. It definitely appeals to older couples who clearly come back year after year and enjoying dressing for dinner, but the hotel desperately needs to tap into a new type of clientel to secure their future. Last year they offered a 'courtesy minibus' to the nearest beach, several miles away. This year, it was apparently not on offer because nobody mentioned it to us which was a shame. We enjoyed a couple of lazing by the pool sessions but generally we chose to be out and about. Can I be very British and recommend taking a travel kettle? We loved having tea in our room in the afternoons! We kept milk in the minibar although we did get a note from the housekeeper telling us this wasnt allowed |
I'll sum up by saying we absolutely LOVE Corfu Town - it is vibrant and seemingly safe, and the architecture is amazing.
We loved the ancient Fort, the lively fruit fish and veg market, the museums, the little churches hidden away, the cafes, the big Asiatic art gallery, the friendliness of the locals. The hotel certainly is certainly grand-looking and in a great location (unless you want beaches) and I do recommend it for that. Be adventurous and get a bus along the coast - it was very easy and cheap, and once we braved it we wished we'd done more trips! Corfu palace hotel, in my opinion, definitely suits more mature folk who relish the peace and quiet and dare I say 'routine'. Very pleasant (chilly) pool with smart loungers all around - only a few 'reservers'!! We are in our 40s and and we found this hotel perfect as a base for exploring the town and doing our own thing! (Must add that if you go on a boat trip do take some layers even if it's hot and sunny when you leave - we found ourselves in the middle of a thunderstorm after one hour .... but fortunately had waterproofs!) |
