Stayed a week at the Corfu Palace during the end of September. Nice elegant hotel with lovely gardens and pool area set in a prime location near to the old town but although it is comforting and welcoming it is very tired and is not worthy of its present 5 star rating. The rooms are in urgent need of decoration. There were lumps of paint knocked off the woodwork, walls that required a coat of emulsion, the bathroom and wardrobe doors did not wish to be closed and the marble walls and floor of the bathroom appeared to be dirty and required regrouting

The carpet in our room was worn and stained and carpets in some public areas notably the breakfast dining room and the main staircase were in need of replacement. Our air conditioning was also temperamental with it working for only four days of our stay. One visit from the engineer did fix it but only temporarily.
Having said all that, the plus sides to Corfu Palace hotel was the quality and selection of the breakfast bufffet menu and the excellent staff, especially those on reception who could not do enough to assist. One exception to this was the permanently grumpy barman whose surly attitude showed an apparent reluctance to us being there in the first place

A nice gesture was the providing of a courtesy room for the day after we had checked out due to our late flights home.
All things considered Corfu palace is a nice hotel that when it opened some 20 years ago would have warranted its five star rating. It is worthy of note that the Thomsons "Hotel of the Year" awards that are proudly dislayed on the wall near reception ran for several successive years but there have been none since 2000. A nice place to stay, most of the staff lovely and an excellent breakfast. All it needs now is fairly minor cosmetic work to justify both its star rating and its room rates
