Easter in Syros is just one of those experiences that you must live at least once in your lifetime. So add it to your bucket list, because this is the one of the few places in Greece where those of the Catholic and Orthodox faiths celebrate Holy Easter together. The atmosphere is simply and uniquely magnificent!
Those of the Orthodox faith follow the epitaph holding poles with tunics, and sponges and dice, thus symbolising Christ's passion. After the Orthodox "Anastasi" mass, meaning "Resurrection", the Catholics carry Jesus Christ’s statue in procession, which is placed in a golden baldachin open on all four sides and covered with violets, lemon blossoms and lilacs, accompanied with banners of various brotherhoods. |
